Changes to CAUT Dues

A minor change in CAUT dues takes effect on July 1, 2023. These fees are calculated based on average academic staff salaries by rank, as reported annually by Statistics Canada, applied against an approved mil rate. The mil rate of 1.5 was approved by CAUT Council in 1994. The mil rate was temporarily reduced to 1.425 due to the impacts of the pandemic, and it has now returned to 1.5.

The monthly amounts are as follows:

CAUT Membership Fees 2023-24 (2022-23)

• Professor $22.68 ($20.95)
• Associate $18.00 ($16.66)
• Assistant $14.62 ($13.49)
• Part-time/Sessional $4.43 ($4.16)

The CAUT Defence Fund is the national strike fund that the Faculty Association belongs to in addition to our local strike fund. The Defence Fund dues will increase from $5.50 to $6.50 per month effective July 1, 2023. The CAUT Defence Fund dues increased from $5.50 to $6.00 per month per member as of January 1, 2023. However, the Faculty Association Executive Committee decided to absorb this increase so that the change for members is effective July 1, 2023. In addition, there is a Defence Fund policy to trigger an additional temporary dues increase of 50 cents per member per month when the fund declines below a threshold and continue until the fund recovers. This second dues increase was effective February 1, 2023. Again, the Faculty Association Executive Committee decided to absorb this increase initially so that the increase for members is effective July 1, 2023.
