For the past number of years, in lieu of holiday gifts, the Faculty Association has donated to food banks in recognition of those in need at this time of year.
The Calgary Food Bank and the University of Calgary Students’ Union Campus Food Bank will each receive $2,500 this year.
Students’ Union Food Bank still accepting donations
The Students’ Union (SU) Foodbank spreads awareness, underscoring the importance of our campus community recognizing the prevalence of food insecurity and that it looks different to different people.
The Students’ Union Food Bank has 21 volunteers helping an average of 30 clients weekly. The main clientele is usually international and graduate students. During the Holidays, there are three ways to offer support:
- Adopt-a-family: sponsors can then buy gifts and hampers for these children anonymously.
- Holiday Hampers: donations provided during the Holidays ensure that everyone can enjoy time with family and friends without financial stress.
- Monetary donations via GoFundMe: https://www.gofundme.com/f/su-campus-food-bank-202223.
The most-needed donations are Tomato Paste, Tomato Soup, Baked Brown Beans (with and without pork), Kidney Beans, Chickpeas, Black beans, Hamburger Helper, Canned Salmon, Canned Turkey, Canned Sardines, Canned Pasta (Spaghettios), Canned Chili, Instant Oatmeal, Dry Laundry Soap, and Tampons/Pads.
