Academic staff at the University of Manitoba have dropped their placards and headed back to the classrooms.
After five weeks on the picket lines, University of Manitoba Faculty Association (UMFA) members voted 91 percent in favour of ratifying a deal that went to binding arbitration on salary, thereby sidestepping a provincial pay-restraint mandate. The issues included salaries, salary floors and ceilings, and government interference in the bargaining process.
The Faculty Association of the University of Calgary was proud to show our solidarity with the UMFA. President David Stewart and Vice-president and Treasurer Justine Wheeler both made trips to Winnipeg as “flying pickets” to support the strike, while the Faculty Association donated $5000 to the UMFA’s strike fund.
